Accuser
Satan is styled the "accuser of the brethren", as seeking to uphold his influence among men by bringing false charges against Christians, with the view of weakening their influence and injuring the cause with which they are identified. He was regarded by the Jews as the accuser of men before God, laying to their charge the violations of the law of which they were guilty, and demanding their punishment. The same Greek word, rendered "accuser," is found in John and Acts, in all of which places it is used of one who brings a charge against another.
Devil
a slanderer, the archenemy of man's spiritual interest. He is called also "the accuser of the brethen". The word "devil" means a "goat", alluding to the wood demons, the objects of idolatrous worship among the heathen. The translation by the Jews is a "demon". In the narratives of the Gospels regarding the "casting out of devils" a different Greek word daimon is used. In the time of our Lord there were frequent cases of demoniacal possession.
Dragon
1) Plural of tan and the name of some unknown creature inhabiting desert places and ruins; probably, as translated in the Revised Version, the jackal.
2) Means some great sea monster. In Isaiah it may denote the crocodile. In Genesis it renders "whales" and "sea monsters." It is rendered "serpent" and is used figuratively in Scriptures.
In the New Testament the word "dragon" is found only in the book of Revelation and is there used metaphorically of "Satan."
Satan
Adversary; accuser. When used as a proper name, the Hebrew word so rendered has the article "the adversary". In the New Testament it is used as interchangeable with Diabolos, or the devil, and is so used more than thirty times.
He is also called "the dragon," "the old serpent"; "the prince of this world"; "the prince of the power of the air"; "the god of this world"; "the spirit that now works in the children of disobedience". The distinct personality of Satan and his activity among men are thus obviously recognized.
He tempted our Lord in the wilderness. He is "Beelzebub, the prince of the devils". He is "the constant enemy of God, of Christ, of the divine kingdom, of the followers of Christ, and of all truth; full of falsehood and all malice, and exciting and seducing to evil in every possible way." His power is very great in the world.
He is a "roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour". Men are said to be "taken captive by him". Christians are warned against his "devices", and called on to "resist" him. Christ redeems his people from "him that had the power of death, that is, the devil". Satan has the "power of death," not as lord, but simply as executioner.
