Easton's Bible Dictionary
Air
the atmosphere, as opposed to the higher regions of the sky. This word usually translated "heavens." The expression "to speak into the air" is a proverb denoting to speak in vain, as to "beat the air" denotes to labour in vain.
Armageddon
Armageddon
symbolically designating the place where the "battle of that great day of God Almighty" shall be fought. The word properly means the "mount of Megiddo." It is the scene of the final conflict between Christ and Antichrist. The idea of such a scene was suggested by the Old Testament great battle-field, the plain of Esdraelon.
Blasphemy
Blasphemy
In the sense of speaking evil of God. It denotes also any kind of calumny, or evil-speaking, or abuse. Our Lord was accused of blasphemy when he claimed to be the Son of God. They who deny his Messiahship blaspheme Jesus. Blasphemy against the Holy Ghost is regarded by some as a continued and obstinate rejection of the gospel, and hence is an unpardonable sin, simply because as long as a sinner remains in unbelief he voluntarily excludes himself from pardon. Others regard the expression as designating the sin of attributing to the power of Satan those miracles which Christ performed, or generally those works which are the result of the Spirit's agency.
Cup
Cup
a wine-cup, various forms of which are found on Assyrian and Egyptian monuments. All Solomon's drinking vessels were of gold. The cups mentioned in the New Testament were made after Roman and Greek models, and were sometimes of gold. The art of divining by means of a cup was practiced in Egypt, and in the East generally. The "cup of salvation" is the cup of thanksgiving for the great salvation. The "cup of consolation" refers to the custom of friends sending viands and wine to console relatives in mourning. The "cup of blessing" is contrasted with the "cup of devils". The sacramental cup is the "cup of blessing," because of blessing pronounced over it. The "portion of the cup" denotes one's condition of life, prosperous or adverse. A "cup" is also a type of sensual allurement. We read also of the "cup of astonishment," the "cup of trembling," and the "cup of God's wrath". The cup is also the symbol of death. Judgments of God. The secret decisions of God's will. The revelations of his will. The infliction of punishment on the wicked.
